About Brooke's Book Blog

Well... Since I currently don't have a job, and in an effort to not become stupid, I have decided to read Newsweek's Top 100 books over the next three (maybe four) years. Thoughts and details to follow.

Still Reading...

Have read a few books since I had RC. (See right column). Skipping Lord of the Rings. I read them in high school, liked them and remember them pretty well. Currently reading The Education of Henry Adams. It is fine. Midnight's Children was one of my favorites so far.

1984... Done!

I finished reading 1984 at the hospital. Good book. Not sure I will have fond memories of it because during the last portion (where the main character is being tortured) I was having contractions. They weren't really all that fun.

Now I am starting His Dark Materials...

Ulysses is Terrible

I mean really terrible. I am 70% done. I don't think anyone really understands this book, so they just make it one of the top 5 because everyone else does. It is like the movie "The Talented Mr. Ripley." It got amazing reviews, but I didn't get it. I don't think anyone got it, but no one wanted to admit it. Hoping to finish this one soon. It does help me fall asleep at night.

50 Books Finished!

I am halfway done! I finished Middlemarch. It was excellent. I really became attached to the characters. It had a similar feel to Anna Karenina... it was a long book covering a significant period of time in the characters lives. But in the end, I really liked most of the characters as opposed to Anna Karenina, so it was more enjoyable.

I am now going to finish reading Ulysses (yuck) and read The History of the Peloponnesian War. It is actually pretty interesting, but I think it will be a slow read. I need to start WWII Volume 3 as well, but I need to borrow it from Adam. Long books right now. And then there is still Proust. But I am putting that off for a year.

This has been a disaster...

I don't like "Ulysses" so I started reading "Middlemarch" while I was in Hawaii. I am really enjoying it and according to my kindle I have 40% of it left. But I fall asleep quickly now, so it is going slow. I need to go back to "Ulysses," but it is awful. I also need to start WWII Volume III. And now my kindle needs to be charged, so I am starting Thucydides' "History of the Peloponnesian War." Not to mention Proust. I am all over the place.

What to do now...

I finished "An American Tragedy". Really good. Really sad.

I think I have decided that I am allowed to skip "Pride and Prejudice". I started it last night, and I really remember it quite well. Plus, I think I have read it three or four times. And with the 3000-4000 page Marcel Proust coming up, I think I get a break.

However, I can't start reading "In Search of Lost Things" yet. It just seems too daunting while I am still working away at WWII. So I started Ulysses. Also, 1000 pages. Seriously? Also, kind of difficult to read and so far I don't really like it.

Boo. But... 49 books down.
